I have finally finished my “Sunburnt Country” baby quilt… it definitely took me longer than I had planned but I think it was worth the wait.
This quilt was a collaboration with a family friend, who commissioned me to make a modern bright baby quilt that had a hint of Australia in it. You can find my original post about this project here.
The graduated colours are inspired by the Aussie sun (bright, hot, & at times unforgiving) and because it is a baby quilt there are lots of little novelty bits and pieces to explore.
And…
My original quilting plan was to do a circles radiating from the yellow center of the quilt. Unfortunately my left thumb has not been co-operating, so I had to resort to drastic measures, which included getting my darling husband to baste this quilt.
The quilt is backed with a fabulous Australian print I picked up when I was home in March.
Snuggle Pot and Cuddle Pie on gum leaves, perfectly Australian.
To finish the whole thing off I bound the quilt with a navy sketch fabric and a Wombat Quilts tag.
This little piece of Australia is headed to the Mid-West to keep a Aussie/American baby warm and hopefully remind her that her Grandmother in Australia loves her.
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!

A busted thumb is the perfect excuse to get them to baste… An easy but painful excuse!

Is that backing fabric available online? It’s just too quirky to not have a few yards of, and it makes a great backing!
Hi Mary. I picked the fabric up at Spotlight in Australia. They are notoriously bad about online shopping. The fabric is Gumnut Babies by May Gibbs for Northoctt Society & Cerebral Palsy Alliance. If you know an Aussie send them to their local Spotlight to pick you up some. It is a fabulous line.
The Snugglepot and Cuddlepie fabric range is still in my local Spotlight. I couldn’t resist a few bits myself. If asking for the same print, ask for the ‘wattle’ one. (Cath, they are not gum leaves! You’ve been away from Oz too long! :))
Of course it is wattle… I should have known that. I have been away too long. Way too long.

Such a great quilt…. the fussy cutting is great, especially love the little doggy and that backing fabric has to be one the most amazing things I’ve seen!!

Stunning as always! Love the color play and all the fun fabrics. Great choice of thread too! I can just picture my husband basting a quilt for me…I’m sure it would include a staple gun with his thinking!!! You are so lucky to have such a lovely, helpful husband!
I love the idea of using a staple gun to baste. My husband did do some online research after basting to see if there was a easy/quick way to do this step. He was disappointed not to find a quick solution!

Karen it is such a easy quilt to make – it just takes lots of squares and a decent selection of scraps.
It’s stunning! And I LOVE that fabric on the back! Would you consider a trade or a sale of a small scrap piece of that backing fabric? I would love to have a hexagon for my “hexie pelt” (it’s giddy99 on Flickr, if you want to see it).
I am sure i have a scrap in my scrap bin. What size do you need?
