I have finally finished my “Sunburnt Country” baby quilt… it definitely took me longer than I had planned but I think it was worth the wait.
This quilt was a collaboration with a family friend, who commissioned me to make a modern bright baby quilt that had a hint of Australia in it. You can find my original post about this project here.
The graduated colours are inspired by the Aussie sun (bright, hot, & at times unforgiving) and because it is a baby quilt there are lots of little novelty bits and pieces to explore.
And…
My original quilting plan was to do a circles radiating from the yellow center of the quilt. Unfortunately my left thumb has not been co-operating, so I had to resort to drastic measures, which included getting my darling husband to baste this quilt.
The quilt is backed with a fabulous Australian print I picked up when I was home in March.
Snuggle Pot and Cuddle Pie on gum leaves, perfectly Australian.
To finish the whole thing off I bound the quilt with a navy sketch fabric and a Wombat Quilts tag.
This little piece of Australia is headed to the Mid-West to keep a Aussie/American baby warm and hopefully remind her that her Grandmother in Australia loves her.
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!
Absolutely gorgeous. I love this quilt! And the binding is perfect! Now…to see if I can talk my husband into basting one of my quilt tops, haha! 🙂
A busted thumb is the perfect excuse to get them to baste… An easy but painful excuse!
I love this! Gorgeous colors, fun fabrics, and a beautiful back!
Wow! Really, really beautiful work.
Beautiful quilt! And husband obviously did a great job at basting!
Is that backing fabric available online? It’s just too quirky to not have a few yards of, and it makes a great backing!
Hi Mary. I picked the fabric up at Spotlight in Australia. They are notoriously bad about online shopping. The fabric is Gumnut Babies by May Gibbs for Northoctt Society & Cerebral Palsy Alliance. If you know an Aussie send them to their local Spotlight to pick you up some. It is a fabulous line.
The Snugglepot and Cuddlepie fabric range is still in my local Spotlight. I couldn’t resist a few bits myself. If asking for the same print, ask for the ‘wattle’ one. (Cath, they are not gum leaves! You’ve been away from Oz too long! :))
Of course it is wattle… I should have known that. I have been away too long. Way too long.
Your post made me tear up — just lovely.
I love the deep saturation of colors on this quilt. That baby should sleep well!!!
Wonderful, wonderful!!
Your quilts are such an inspiration! I love your posts. Thank you very much! ~Susie in Stanwood, Washington, USA
T hanks Susie. I get such pleasure making these quilts and I am glad that that comes across.
What a beautiful baby quilt! Beautiful!! Baby will love it.
Oh my gosh, this is a beautifully fantastic finish!
Love the backing fabric! What a gorgeous baby quilt. Lucky baby 🙂
It’s absolutely gorgeous. I love the backing. What a wonderful hubby to baste for you. Hope you thumb gets better.
Such a great quilt…. the fussy cutting is great, especially love the little doggy and that backing fabric has to be one the most amazing things I’ve seen!!
Just stunning! Beautiful use of colour and I love the Snugglepot and Cuddlepie backing -I need to teach my hubby how to baste my quilts too.
This is beautiful!
Awesome!!!!
Yep, I knew who this belonged to from the thumbnail picture in my rss feed. 🙂 Lovely and full of color as usual!
Cath!!! I love this quilt. The colors!!! Gorgeous. BUT that picture of your husband!!!! Priceless!!!
He has been getting a bit of ribbing from his friends about this photo, which I may have posted on Facebook!
Tell him I think he’s the coolest person ever and that he has set a high bar for my husband 🙂
Stunningly beautiful! Lucky baby and lucky you for having such great help from your husband.
Wow! Stunningly vibrant & beautiful quilt. Absolutely gorgeous
Stunning as always! Love the color play and all the fun fabrics. Great choice of thread too! I can just picture my husband basting a quilt for me…I’m sure it would include a staple gun with his thinking!!! You are so lucky to have such a lovely, helpful husband!
I love the idea of using a staple gun to baste. My husband did do some online research after basting to see if there was a easy/quick way to do this step. He was disappointed not to find a quick solution!
Really gorgeous and definitely a reminder of Australia! Great work!
What would a New Zealand based quilt feature?
Just beautiful, and all of the novelty fabrics make it so much fun for a little one (or anyone).

Love this quilt Cath……..will have to take a trip to Spotlight!! Have a few quilts to gift and the backing would go beautifully.
Oh my, this is lovely! I really want to make a quilt like this.
Karen it is such a easy quilt to make – it just takes lots of squares and a decent selection of scraps.
It’s stunning! And I LOVE that fabric on the back! Would you consider a trade or a sale of a small scrap piece of that backing fabric? I would love to have a hexagon for my “hexie pelt” (it’s giddy99 on Flickr, if you want to see it).
I am sure i have a scrap in my scrap bin. What size do you need?
oh this is lovely! And the back – what a nice simple design. What a rousing success! Oh and love that hubby basted it! 😉
Beautiful quilt!!!
That’s a fantastic quilt! And I love that your husband helps you basting! He’s a keeper!
This quilt is just stunning, Cath! I love the layout of the colors and the illusion created!

It’s beautiful! I love the vibrant colors.
This is gorgeous! I adore the Snugglepot and Cuddlepie fabric for the backing! We lived in Sydneybwhen I was a girl, and I fell in love with Snugglepot, Cuddlepie, and the Muddleheaded Wombat! Wish I could get my hands on some of that fabric!
Beautiful front and back. If it had been made on my behalf, I would be over the moon. I’m sure your friend and her family must love it. This is one of the best baby quilts I have ever seen. Great job.
Thanks so much. I must admit the fact that it was being made for someone special and the fact that it was a little piece of home for me, made me very very motivated to make something beautiful.
This is beautiful! and I love your yellow stitches!
Gorgeous! You did a beautiful job with the colors and such precise piecing!
This quilt gives me chills, seriously. Especially with the poem–seeing words transformed into a quilt is just about my favorite thing. It is truly amazing. Lucky baby, lucky parents!
Thanks Laura. I loved making this quilt, it really made me home sick.
The quilt is just stunning! Tell your husband he is worth his weight in gold! Hugs, Karen
Thanks Karen. I know it am pretty lucky to have a husband who is not only willing to help but also does not get too upset when I a picture of him basting up on the site.
Hello Wombat Qulits! You ROCK! I love your page – so bright and colorful! You page is so well done and your voice is cheerful and straightforward.
I am loving what your doing all the way across the ocean in Seattle, Washington. 🙂 Keep up the good work!
…I’m also dying to know where you had those adorable quilt tags printed up! I would love something like that for future projects.
Hi. I am actually not that far from you… I am currently in Portland Oregon. I got the quilt tags on etsy – http://www.etsy.com/shop/JennifersJewels. They were not too expensive and she will work with you to get what you want on the tag.
So lovely!
Thank you Cath. Absolutely gorgeous….. and really appreciated. love Win
