After last weeks easy (read 18 piece) blocks I decided to up the fabric piece count with this weeks star.
This fabulous star is another free pattern from Quilting on the Squares new bonus compass star patterns. The Cactus Star Block star is a 64 piece star, with enough complexity in the colouring that I had to resort to coding my pattern…
I must admit more and more orange is creeping into these stars…along with a touch of dark purple here and there. I just can not seem to limit myself too much colour wise, particularly with these more complex blocks. They work best, I think, if you have variety in your colours.
Once again, another lovely star pieced pattern! I’ll have to give this one a try.
Awesome star!!
wow! You’re my hero. I dont even think I would touch that. 20+ pieces and my brain explodes. Nice work. 🙂
absolutely beautiful!
Beautifully done! I think the purple is totally appropriate in this block. Both the purple and all the oranges make it so interesting. Your color play is top notch!
Absolutely love this block…….amazing. Wow – 64 pieces now that is the work!!! Love the colours too!
Gorgeous!
It’s beautiful…. Good job! I’ve recently discovered your site, and have loved looking back at all your amazing projects. Thank you for sharing!
That’s a gorgeous whirly star, worthy of Vincent himself.
I am trying to bring a little Van Gogh into my blocks, but I think it would be so much easier to do if I just used paint.
Maybe with the quilting?
Great idea. My quilting will have to improve expidentally before then though… Definitely something to aspire to.
Your colours are perfect for that very impressive block! It’s beautiful and sparkling! x Teje
You have the best fabric choices when it comes to these lovely paper-pieced blocks! I can’t wait to see these all together. 🙂
Woah…that doesn’t look difficult!! Another stunning bock. I’m always impressed by your array of fabrics 🙂
I have been hoarding/collecting fabric for a while… Little bits here and there. I may have a problem…lol.
You have some mad paper piecing skills, Cath! This block is gorgeous!

My husband reckons I have about 6 more months of paper piecing before I hit “expert” level…that is 10,000 hours of paper and fabric. I reckon it is more like two years!
Ahhh, this is so pretty! I want to make a Christmas one.
These are incredible. Every time you post a new one it makes me want to make a quilt like this! Great job!
That is a stunning star!
Cath, I love this block and I envy your paper piecing skills. I’ve tried & tried but my brain gets it all turned around somehow once I flip it. One day I WILL conquer it. 😀
Susan hang in there, it is worth the effort. I must admit there are some quilting blocks/techniques that I can not get my head around….mainly curves and precise piecing without paper.
Thanks for the encouragement. Those little 6 sided babies just keep praying on my mind. 😀
I’m such a goose! When I replied about the “6 sided babies” I WAS thinking about…yup…you guessed it….hexies. 😛
Takes talent doesn’t it? lol
I do appreciate the encouragement about the paper/foundation piecing tho’. One day….
Too funny. N
These blocks are really influencing me! I haven’t yet tried paper piecing, but I really would like to try. And I’ll have to build up my fabric collection of yellows and deep blues to make a beauty like yours!
