Playing with a Lizzy Rainbow… and a giveaway

Last weekend my darling husband abandoned me to go on a boys camping trip, and as soon as he had walked out the door I knew exactly what I was doing with my free time….

You see just before DH left I took delivery of the latest Lizzy House range, Lovely Hunt….and I knew that I had to use it immediately so I pulled out ALL my Lizzy House fabric….

my lizzy house stash

…and cut out a 5 inch square from each piece of fabric.  Then, using my hexagon mini for guidance I got to work….

As there was no husband I could keep working without having to pack things away… I had squares and fabric all over the floor…and it took me a couple of days to get all the blocks up…I kept adjusting and rearranging, coming back to the design wall in between other tasks…I finally ended up with this…

Lizzy House simple patchwork

The first block I placed was the low volume cats and then I just worked slowly from there.  I tried to tackle one or two colours at a time, making sure that there was a flow to the colours…

Not all the fabric made it into this quilt top…

I only ended up using 168 different fabrics and had about 20 left over.  I could not work out how to make the brown palette work so it did not even get a look in.

A couple of the prints had too much colour variation in them at 5 inches big to make the them work, but all the wonderful blenders…the Pearl Bracelets, the mini bracelets, the Butterflies and the chain links helped make the novelty fabrics play nice.

This quilt is definitely my quilt… it is not going anywhere but onto our couch.  As the weather starts to turn icky here in the Pacific Northwest this quilt will keep me warm and cozy…. all I have to do is finish it up!

Now while I was cutting up my Lizzy Stash I cut an extra fat eight or two for a give away.  By the time I had finished working through my stash I had a stack of 25 different fabrics… including quite a few out of print beauties, as well as some of the new Lovely Hunt….

giveaway bundle

So if you would like to win this fat eight bundle just leave a comment below, telling me what you would do with this wonderful bundle of colour.  I will draw a winner next Wednesday, and as always the contest is open to my overseas friends too.

This giveaway is closed. Thanks to everyone who entered and congratulations to Linda who won.

  1. I haven’t seen Lizzy House fabric anywhere but in your blog, as far as I know. Would like to try some of your paper piecing patterns with it – haven’t done paper piecing yet.

  2. Loving the quilt, my daughters autistic and loves to cuddle up with soft quilts they make her feel safe. So big project for me that’s been going since Easter is to make her a epp elcetic mix quilt so far were 450 hexies in. I would love to add this collection in on her quilt. Making it a truly global quilt for my little monster mash,,!

  3. Oh My! I’ve been wanting to start on hexies and I’ve been auditioning fabrics. As you’ve proved, these would be beautiful! I’m a beginner, so I don’t have “stash” yet… Thanks for the opportunity!

  4. I would definitely make something scrappy and warm to snuggle under. I’ve yet to make a quilt for myself really. Every bed has a quilt and lots of friends as well but none for me to enjoy as a “blankey”. These fabrics are gorgeous! Maybe some paper piecing….who knows.

  5. Your rainbow quilt looks beautiful! I have always wanted to do one myself but do (not yet) have enough color variety in my stash, so that would be a good start!

  6. Hi Cath, this is a very generous offer. I would make a couple of dolls quilts for my grand-niece with the fabrics, that would be lovely as I made a quilt for her bed with some Lizzie’s fabrics.Thank you, love your work.

  7. What a lovely grouping of fabrics! I think I would make a small triangle quilt. Thanks for the giveaway! Great project during your alone time!

  8. Thanks for the giveaway! I would use them either to make a square quilt similar to yours, or else to make a pieced border around a gray or black skirt.

  9. So many possibilities. I have been meaning to get started on a quilt using the Wanta Fanta block……,these fabrics might just be the inspiration I need I get started.

  10. Me, I see two little girls getting a nana make- would stretch it out and get two snuggle quilts- something with stars, I’m sure. Your quilt looks lovely! Isn’t it nice to know when one of our creations is totally for us! Thanks for the giveaway

  11. Me- I see 2 little girls getting a “nana made”- I would stretch it out and make 2 snugglie lap quilts. Probably something with stars:) Thank you for the giveaway- Your quilt looks fabulous!

  12. I think your fabrics would look fantastic using the EPP plus design that Svetlana from S.O.T.A.K. has posted about and has featured at the top of her blog. I’d like to give it a try!

  13. I can see those fabrics surrounded by a lightly textured solid as a background and either having small pieces of this fabric floating in the background or using each piece as a “surround”…either a square or rectangle or triangle or other shape “ring” where a piece of the background is in the middle. I can also envision using the quick curved ruler with these fabrics and a lightly textured background.

  14. I would usend some for a PSQ that I’m collecting 2″ squares for. I’m also going to do a hexie quilt using all different fabrics….and who knows what the rest could be used for….limitless possibilities. And I love what you did with the fabrics!

  15. I’d make the 2″ square postage stamp quilt I’ve always wanted to make, and those fabrics would play so beautifully with my scraps. There would have to be quite a lot of fussy cutting, of course… Thank you so much for generously sharing your gorgeous fabrics with us, and that lap quilt of yours is fabulous; masterful use of colour, as always!

      • If you make it the 2″ squares, I can use even my smallest scraps, but anything at all is welcome! What excitement! I’m going to try the Elizabeth Hartman fusible interfacing method – I love the idea of sticking everything down and *then* stitching it together…

  16. LOVE your two Lizzy quilts. she is my favorite designer and I regret not stocking up on her work when I first started quilting 7yrs ago. If I won these, I’d make myself a quilt to snuggle with this winter in Boston. Hopefully we will have less snow this year!

  17. I’d like to say that I’m going to use it for some very important project, like a baby quilt for one of the 4 new nieces and/or nephews I’m going to get in the next 8 months. But, in all honestly, I’ll probably just put it in a place of honour on my shelf and pet it a few times a day, every time I walk past.

  18. I made myself a rainbow charm quilt and it’s my favorite of the ones I’ve made so far – mostly because I made it long enough to snuggle all the way under, instead of square. I love your color layout and would probably want to make another rainbow-y charm quilt.

  19. Oh, love the rainbow quilt!!! Hmm, I am trying to limit my color choices a bit more, so this was a great idea. If I was the lucky one, I would make a new cover for my old wooden kitchen couch!

  20. You are so talented!! And I wanna make what you make 🙂 For real. I only have a few Lizzy House collections (missed the cat one), but I admire most everything you create with her lines, plus everything you don’t. You’re fantastic!
