A drunk finish….

Despite the Portland snow…we have had 10 inches in my neighborhood… I managed to get a few snaps of my latest finish…

The snow has prevented me from getting to my backyard and hanging the quilt on my the back fence, so the photos are a little different. This quilt began last year with me playing with a Go Baby cutter a friend had lent me…and you can see my process for making the block on my original post…

I must admit I would never make curves this small without the help of a cutting machine and a glue pen…. It was incredibly addictive and I must admit I have already used the cutter again…another drunkard path quilt is underway…

I loved using my Cotton & Steel stash on this project… these fabrics are so fun, colourful and full of fussy cutting goodness. I may have got a few more fat quarter bundles from Santa that have inspired me to start a new C&S quilt… but more about that next week!

The quilting on this quilt was done by my friend Michelle Freedman using Modern Domestic’s Bernina long arm. Michelle is the queen of the Q24 and the stores machine has just been automated… I can not wait to play using the computer assist.

This quilt is now headed to the washing machine and then on to a local Pediatric Intensive Care unit. It is going to make for a fun game or two of “I spy”.

New Year and new start…

One of my New Years Resolutions is to get back to documenting my quilts and process more… between concussions and Influenza A I have had a quite couple of months but I am raring to go.

This year I am going to be throwing myself into charity quilting with gusto…I think I may need it to keep sane during what is going to be an very interesting year. So without further ado lets get this started with a Do Good Stitches finish…

The wonky circle quilt is finally done and ready to be donated. I kind of love this quilt. I did a post last year on how to make these wonky blocks and I was thrilled with how the Hope Circle embraced the crazy curves.

There really is a freedom and sense of fun in wonky and it was the fun that I embraced when I threw this quilt up on the longarm. The quilting is far from precise or accurate but it follows the flow of the weird shaped curves of the block and it was a hoot to quilt. I had some fun music on my ipod and was laughing and smiling the whole time I was working on this project!

To finish her off I used a lovely floral print I had in my stash… this is not a gender neutral quilt and so I fully embraced the girly…

So I can finally cross another Do Good Stitches quilt off my WIP list….just in time for me to start getting more blocks in the post for a new quilt. I now only have 3 Do Good quilts left to finish… so I am off to the sewing machine..

Another lot of love….

Yesterday I shared the group Quilt for Pulse we made… today I am sharing my the quilt I also made for the cause. I had actually started making this quilt when we decided to make a group quilt.

For my quilt I used some more of my pre-cut solid squares, but worked with my 3 inch stash this time… I have a lot of pre-cut squares and both of these projects did not even start to dent my pile!

I played around on my design wall to find a heart shape that I liked and then went to work making these blocks in a rainbow assortment of colours.

I made sure there was a good mix of lights and darks in each heart and used a variety of whites and creams in the background. For the background I also threw in some pastel pinks, purples, greens and blues but I made sure I did not put the pastels right next to the heart so that there was clear definition to the heart shape.

I also quilted this quilt on Modern Domestic’s Q24 longarm… I quilted this one after I had done the huge heart so I was over loopy hearts and went instead for straight line boxes. It was nice to do something more structured on this quilt.

I think I am going to revisit this block. It was easy and really effective…plus I still have shoe boxes full of 3 inch solid squares!

Quilts of love…

This week I managed to finish up two very special quilts. If you are a member of the Modern Quilt Guild you may have heard of the Quilts for Pulse drive. After the tragic shooting in June at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida a member of the Orland Modern Quilt Guild, Alissa Lapinsky put out a call for rainbow heart blocks. She wanted to make quilts for families of the victims.

The call for help from Alissa gave me, and some of my friends, the opportunity to do something in a situation where you usually feel as if there is nothing you can do to help. So one weekend in June Lisa, Sara, Kristie and I got together and made a quilt…

I had a tonne of pre-cut 5 inch squares in hundreds of different colours – I am getting in the habit of cutting my scraps into usable sizes and had just cut a pile of my solid scraps into squares. So we sorted the squares into colour order and started playing. The end result looked like this…

We pieced this beautiful top, working together, in a day. It was so much fun to make this top with friends and it was so good to do something positive in the days following the tragedy. It then took me a little while to get it on the long arm at Modern Domestic.

This was the biggest quilt I had every long armed and I must admit I got a little crazy somewhere in the middle of it… my hearts got a little loopy but the overall effect is not too bad.

I went with a pieced black and white quilt back to counteract the bright loud front of the quilt…

The three sets of feet you can see under the quilt are our husbands. The boys helped hold the quilt while we photographed it…. and as one of those boys is over 6 foot it gives you an idea of how big the quilt finished up.

We finished the quilt off with a label from Story Patches, who kindly donated labels to many quilters making Pulse Quilts. I had not used one of these patches before but it was perfect for this quilt. If you have not seen Story Patches they allow you to download message about your quilt using photos, audio and/or video. There is a QR code on the label that can be scanned so the receiver of the quilt can see the story behind making the quilt. We downloaded a message and some photos of the day we spent making the quilt.

This quilt has now joined the hundreds of other quilts and blocks that have been sent to Orlando. I doubt that Alissa knew that she would get the amazing response she did. Thanks to efforts of the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild, the quilting community has flooded Orlando with love, support and quilts.

Yipee a finish…

This summer has been a little crazy, but in amongst it all I have managed to finish up some quilts including this fun one…

postage stamp quilt

This is my second postage stamp quilt using Rita from Red Pepper Quilts technique. It is really an easy way to get all these little 1 1/2 inch squares sewn together. To make it easier on myself, every time I cut out a quilt or have some scraps I will cut a 2 x 7 inch strip and put it in a shoe box. Over the course of a couple of months that shoe box fills up.

When you are working this small I do not worry about fussy cutting but focus mainly on colour….making sure I have some darks and lights as well as lots of white in my prints… That said you can still play a great game of I Spy with this quilt…

I did have some fun with the quilting on this piece. For the first time I used one a quilting template…

I have picked up a couple of these things over the years but never ever used them before… for this quilt I picked a waved pattern and using my trust Frixon bravely drew all over the quilt top.

Now my quilting is not perfect but it was a fun exercise. More than anything it was good for practicing this circular technique which is used a bit in free motion. It is going to take a bit more practice before I am even remotely proficient but it was a fun exercise. I even got to bust out my Bernina stitch regulator…
