Pastel pretty – Paper piecing Monday

This week marks the start of my next paper piecing adventure. It took me a little while to choose my colour palette for this quilt and in the end I wanted to do something softer. So without further ado here is the first block of the series…

The block is the September block from Don’t Call Me Betsy’s “Lucky Star BOM” program. I subscribed to this series at the beginning of the year and have made a few of the blocks over the year, including for my Paper piecing Boston Blocks. They are great patterns and the fun thing is if you sign up for the BOM program now you get January to September immediately. None of the waiting month by month that I had to do – have I mentioned I am not overly patient!

This pattern is an easy 44 pieces and I love the pin wheel in the center. I hope you like the new palette and will join me next week for the block number 2.

Getting back in the swing…

After a month or so of being off my game I am pleased to say I have FINALLY finished a quilt top. Pausing for applause. I can not believe that the last time I posted a finished quilt/quilt top was the end of May.

So without further ado… here she is.

Yep I finished my Blush log cabin quilt top. I first posted about this block a couple of weeks ago… here. I wanted to make a quilt that used peach/apricot fabric, having seen a post on a Modern quilt site about how you should NOT use apricot in modern quilts. I really do love hearing that you should NOT do something, it just makes me want to do whatever I am not meant to do. (This feeling may possibly be the result of having an Army Colonel for a father).

My response was to find a way to make the colour work. I pulled this stash of fabric and started playing.

After a false start or two I got it to work… with this block.

Which turned into this…

Scrappy modern fabulous fun. And I think the peach/apricot fabric works perfectly. It is not at all dated or dowdy.

The fabulous array of pink and purple scraps help. What are your thoughts on the often maligned apricot/peach? Have your used it in your modern quilts?

Paper Piecing Monday presents Morrison

I can not believe I am already at block 6 of my bright sampler quilt. This week’s block is called the Morrison…

The pattern is once again from Julie’s Block Rock’n collection. You can find the free paper piecing pattern here, along with different layouts for the block. In Julie’s test block she does more with the center of the block which I really like, and which makes for a quite different pattern.

The Morrison is not to complex a pattern and uses only 40 pieces of fabric… perfect for the scrappy approach.

As I have made it to 6 blocks, I could finally lay out the blocks and see how the quilt is coming together.

I am pleased with what I have so far. I do love how the colour pops against the neutral grey background. Six down, quite a few more to go…. so see you back here next week for installment 7.

Going slowly insane…

First up thanks to everyone for the kind thoughts and comments. I was really touched.

I am doing good but was not warned how boring it is to recover from surgery. The first 4 to 5 days you are so tired and sore and doped up that you do not care. It is the days that follow that are really annoying me. Obviously patience is not my strong suit.

I am on day 9 of re-corporation and I am driving myself and my husband crazy. I am well enough that I am alert and functioning but not well enough to be able to bend down or sit at a sewing machine or do anything for more than an hour without dozing off. My life has become a cycle of watching old episodes of Deadliest Catch, making hexies and sleeping. Yipee!

I have been mainly sewing my hexagon flowers together. My placement is rather random – my husband keeps wanting to add a pattern to the placement but I like to just go with the flow. Here is what I have so far….

It may not look like much but I also had to do some running repairs. Some of my earlier stitches were not as small as they needed to be. I had to go back into about 4 flowers and re-stitch.

The back side of this quilt shows just how much work goes into these suckers. Lots of tiny hand stitches…

I am a little burnt out on hexagons, but they are really the only quilting I can handle at the moment. My hope is that by Sunday I will be back behind the sewing machine. Come hell or high water there will be a Paper Piecing Monday. Promise.

Finally a proper finish

Today I am happy to say I finally finished a quilt – quilted, bound and labeled. It has been two weeks since I finished a quilt and I was feeling a little antsy about it all. So without further ado, here she is…

If you are a regular to the site you will have seen this quilt in various stages of production, but she is now all finished!

I must admit I have struggled today to get her photographed properly. The lighting conditions have not been at all co-operative, but fourth time is a charm.

I did straight line stitching using a magenta thread. I really did not know what colour thread to go with – white did not seem right, navy was a little too dark, green too light. The thread choice is okay but it is not quite what I wanted. Too late now right!
