This week I have been playing with a selection of the Wee Wander’s fabric range by Michael Miller. I love this fabric and have had a blast playing this week.
Using the fabric for inspiration I pulled supporting fabric from my stash and ended up with this lovely bundle.
As soon as I bought the Wee Wanders, I knew what block I wanted to use – the Rolling Stone Block which dates back to the late 19th century…
I found this block, and great instructions on the Dont’ Call me Betsy site. I went with the traditional block layout but no matter what layout you use, it is an easy block that is made up of three units.
1. A single fabric square… perfect for highlighting the wonderful fussy cut horses …
2. A block made up of a rectangle of your chosen neutral (for me it was Kona Snow) and a rectangle of your coloured fabric. This was a great opportunity for me to chain piece, something I do not often get to do…
3. A square in square block, that is paper pieced, but can be done traditionally as well. For my blocks I removed the paper from this unit before I sewed the block together (a first for me, but it worked perfectly).
These units are then laid out to make a finished 12 1/2 inch block. I must admit for my block I enlarged the block slightly to room for the horse blocks. My unfinished block is 14 1/2 inches square.
This week the weather here in Portland has been gloriously hot and I have not got as much of this quilt done as I would have liked. I have three blocks completed…
and as the design wall shows, a number in process.
I am determined today not to be distracted by the sun…or the cat… of the World Cup. AUGH!
Love the block and the fabric too! Good luck on not getting distracted ~
The World Cup match was boring and the sun too hot. I got a bit done. Yipee.
I do love this line, even more after working with some of the Feathers fabric! The rolling stone block is perfect for the line. I have been so distracted lately with my son’s daily swim lessons, making and canning apricot jam, and looking up fermenting recipes. Today I’m with you! Not to be distracted…once naptime starts.
Oh what are you fermenting…. Beer? Cider?
Love these blocks.
Its a fun block but the colours are yummy in the fabric lines. Im distracted by the cold 😦 so Im envious hahahahahahah
Cold is perfect for quilting. I am jealous…sort of.
Yeah, good luck with the not being distracted bit…. It was cold at 5.30am when we went to the gym, but it’s back up to North Queensland winter standards now, or as you Oregonians like to call it, ‘summer’! Never mind, you’ll be here soon…
I am a little concerned that I will no longer be able to handle the heat.
It’ll be warm, all right, but not the full blast roaring heat you get at Christmas. Lots of loose cotton and linen, leave everything black at home. You’ll be right!
Love what you did with this!
Wonderful colors and very interesting blocks. Enjoy the Portland sun since winter and Spring can be so gray. At least my sewing room has a beautiful window.
Great fabric and block for it! I especially like the horse center with the polka dots around it. The mix will work well.
Great use of such fun fabric! The Wee Wander line is just too fun. I especially love the fussy cutting of the horses. 🙂
The more I see of this fabric, the more I love it. And you’ve done such a lovely job, featuring all those fun prints. Can’t wait to see it all finished!
This is a great block for showcasing these fabrics. Thanks for sharing … 🙂 Pat
Oooooh, I love it!!! I’m in love with these fabrics since I’ve seen them some time ago and you simply naild it by using rolling stone block (isn’t it called “broken wheel” as well??). I really like these horses in the middle – they are the best!
PS: Sorry for my terrible english – I hope you will know what I wanted to say 😀
Misa your English is great…and much better than my Czech. I agree that the horses are the best thing. So pretty and fun.
Love these blocks!!! And the fabrics you used to pull in go great with Wee Wander!
So pretty!
Wonderful! 🙂
Good idea – enlarging the block to fit the horse.
Has the cat moved in permanently?
