Any one who is active on Instragram will be aware of the flurry of miniature quilt swaps going on at the moment and last week I finally succumbed signed up for one … now if I am honest I would say that I did not always get what was so cool about miniatures but I finally worked it out…
(a) It is a quilt you can complete quickly and easy and have the satisfaction of a finish
(b) You can try new techniques quickly and easily (I keep thinking they are going to be a great way to practice my free motion quilting).
(c) They look really cool pinned up together on the wall of your sewing space.
So with this in mind I had some fun this weekend making 3 inch Economy blocks…
What I love about the Economy block is that it allows for really great fussy cutting and what I love about paper piecing is that it allows for accuracy when working on such a small scale.
I must admit I got a little carried away and finished a whole mini quilt this weekend…

I must tell you I am not done yet with miniature patterns…but it is back to green stars next week…promise.

Oh, you did get a bit carried away, didn’t you? A whole quilt’s worth! But very, very gorgeous. It’d be a shame to practice FMQ on something so fabulous….
That is the problem with practicing free motion…you need a quilt that you are not too attached to or not to worried about messing up to practice on. I think I will be whipping up some small charity quilts for practice until I get better.

I am getting in the PMQG spirit and playing with mini quilts. The Guild is partly to blame for my current addiction.
You post such great stufff that I always want to add to my list…this one is super cute….and now is also on my list! 🙂
Andee at least this one is quick and easy to make… not to much of a time commitment.

I don’t really ‘get’ mini quilts either, but I am thinking of making one to hang on the wall in my sewing area. I understood a and b before, but what to do with them had me puzzled until c dawned on me. I have an idea, but I don’t want a whole quilt of it … In the meantime I signed up to my first Instagram swap – a pincushion swap.
Carla you should sign up for a mini swap next. They are so fun and a great way to meet new people on Instagram. I was not a big fan of the mini until recently but now am a little addicted. I have another one up on the design wall, though I do not know what I will do with it when it is done.
