Playing with a Lizzy Rainbow… and a giveaway

Last weekend my darling husband abandoned me to go on a boys camping trip, and as soon as he had walked out the door I knew exactly what I was doing with my free time….

You see just before DH left I took delivery of the latest Lizzy House range, Lovely Hunt….and I knew that I had to use it immediately so I pulled out ALL my Lizzy House fabric….

my lizzy house stash

…and cut out a 5 inch square from each piece of fabric.  Then, using my hexagon mini for guidance I got to work….

As there was no husband I could keep working without having to pack things away… I had squares and fabric all over the floor…and it took me a couple of days to get all the blocks up…I kept adjusting and rearranging, coming back to the design wall in between other tasks…I finally ended up with this…

Lizzy House simple patchwork

The first block I placed was the low volume cats and then I just worked slowly from there.  I tried to tackle one or two colours at a time, making sure that there was a flow to the colours…

Not all the fabric made it into this quilt top…

I only ended up using 168 different fabrics and had about 20 left over.  I could not work out how to make the brown palette work so it did not even get a look in.

A couple of the prints had too much colour variation in them at 5 inches big to make the them work, but all the wonderful blenders…the Pearl Bracelets, the mini bracelets, the Butterflies and the chain links helped make the novelty fabrics play nice.

This quilt is definitely my quilt… it is not going anywhere but onto our couch.  As the weather starts to turn icky here in the Pacific Northwest this quilt will keep me warm and cozy…. all I have to do is finish it up!

Now while I was cutting up my Lizzy Stash I cut an extra fat eight or two for a give away.  By the time I had finished working through my stash I had a stack of 25 different fabrics… including quite a few out of print beauties, as well as some of the new Lovely Hunt….

giveaway bundle

So if you would like to win this fat eight bundle just leave a comment below, telling me what you would do with this wonderful bundle of colour.  I will draw a winner next Wednesday, and as always the contest is open to my overseas friends too.

This giveaway is closed. Thanks to everyone who entered and congratulations to Linda who won.

  1. I would be beyond thrilled to win a lizzy house bundle! I’m not working anymore so I haven’t been able to buy any fabric for myself. I’ve missed out on so many great lizzy house lines! I’d want to make myself a hexagon quilt just like yours with all my favorite prints past and present in a gradient rainbow. Oh what a lucky girl I’d be!

  2. Oh was it last year your dearly beloved went on a camping trip? have to love home alone time 🙂 Ive become addicted to a paper pieced cat pattern, think this collection would really add some zing to a collection of kitties hahahahaah

  3. I’ll make a beautiful cover for the pillow of my stash bench. Since I was a child I love things with many colors but always combined in my way. Cath, thanks for the inspiration!

  4. I would definitely use the fabrics in the quilt(s)I am working on at the moment called “Woman of the Bible”. I am making two of the quilts at the same time and making them very scrappy, hardly using any of the pieces twice. I absolutely adore colour and your fabrics look like they could satisfy my craving for all colours in my quilts.

  5. Lizzy House it’s a master at the rainbow, and so are you! Since I’ve got log cabins on the brain, I’d add some solids for the hearths, and sew up some LC’s large enough to show these fabulous prints.

  6. Oh WOW! I can’t decide if the squares or the hexies are prettier, they’re both gorgeous. Now as to what I’d do with them, well I’ve got a pattern to make butterfly appliqué blocks that I think they’d be perfect for, a whole quilt of butterflies for one of my girls! Fingers crossed!!

  7. Beautiful quilt. Of course you have to keep it. Believe it or not, I don’t have any Lizzy House. No explanation, coz when I see it I always love it. I think I would make a baby quilt, maybe a kaleidoscope pattern?

  8. I love everything you make!!! I think I’d really love to make a quilt out of all the random blocks I love….all in Lizzy House! I love that look and I think the plotting would be as fun as the making

  9. These prints are so lovely! Your quilt pieces are delicious. I would love to take possession of those darling prints as I”m working on a Scrappy New York Beauty quilt and I don’t have near enough scraps! I guess I just don’t buy enough fabric!

  10. Every year since ww2 my local guild has made a quilt for charity, nowadays it goes to raise money for the local volunteer fire department, they have a fund raising breakfast and raffle the quilt. There used to be around 50 or more members off our guild, now we are down to only five of us. This makes the job a little tougher and costlier. So we would use these fabrics in the yearly quilt. Thank you.

  11. This is just about the cutest quilt I have seen for a long time for a childs bed! So much to see and point at and so colourful! Makes my heart sing! Out comes all my material and see if I can match it! Will hopefully be able to show you a photo after this weekend!

  12. I adore this quilt- and what fun to be able to take your time laying it out and coming back without needing to pack it up each day (I have 2 kids so this is a luxury I rarely have). This bundle is such a beautiful range of colors- perhaps I would do some sort of variation of a rainbow quilt! Thanks for sharing such lovelies from your stash!
