This week, after a little procrastination. I finally finished sewing all my green stars into a quilt top…
I alternated the paper pieced blocks with 8 1/2 inch squares of low volume fabric… using mainly fabrics that had been used in the star blocks.
I sewed all the blocks together, keeping the paper on the stars. I have found if I remove the paper from the pattern before I sew everything together there can be issues making everything fit properly. There can be a lot of bias pieces in paper piecing and you want to minimize the wiggle…
When I had sewn all the stars and low volume blocks together I realized the quilt needed a border of some sort. I ended up making four flying geese blocks and interspersed them within the 3 inch border.
I love how the border and those geese bring the whole quilt together.
To celebrate finishing this quilt I thought I would do a little giveaway.
Up for grabs is this 18 fat eight cuts of fabric so you can make your own green star blocks – 12 different greens and 6 different low volumes. If you would like to win just leave a comment on this post and we will pick a winner on Monday. As always I am happy to post overseas.
THE COMPETiTION IS NOW CLOSED. Thanks.
This combination of the low volume b&w works so beautifully with the greens. Really fresh. Love it.
I love your green star quilt, it is lovely.
this quilt top is just too cool! the greens almost glow..I love it!! and I would love to win all those fabric goodies too!
Thanks for the giveaway! I really love how you put the flying geese in the border, that’s an interesting idea to add a little something cool to it, and I’m probably going to be copying that idea!
I love your stars and the colour combination!
I love the B&W fabrics used on this quilt. When combined with the green stars it’s perfect!
This is beautiful! The flying geese on the border were such a great idea, too!
I used some of the blocks in your site to learn paper piecing. I love your star blocks and the bright fabrics you use in them and I’m amazed at your fabric stash. It must be huge. I’ve never seen anyone using such a large range of whites/creams. Your quilt looks great as always.
This quilt is just gorgeous! I love your paper-pieced stars!
This is lovely! I’ve become very discouraged with paper piecing, but I think you tip about waiting until everything is joined to take the papers out is enough to make me want to take another stab at it. Thanks!
Wow! There is SO much time, effort and love in that quilt! It looks gorgeous. I love the greens, it reminds me of the Emerald city from the Wizard of Oz.
I love your paper piecing patterns and the way you have arranged theses green stars on the low volume background looks amazing! If I was lucky enough to win this great giveaway, I would definitely be making some of these green stars!
Love it! The low volume works so well with the freshness of the green
Your stars look awesome! The finished quilt is a stunner. I’d love to win the fabric 🙂 emilyste7ens at gmail dot com
What a cool give-away! And yes, that border is just perfect!
You know I’ve been in love with the Emerald Stars since you first started making them! It would be an honour and a joy to be able to incorporate some of the fabrics into my own work. I’ve just made the Alternating Star block shown at top left for my F2F block swap, enlarged to a 12 inch block, and I love it! Very easy to line everything up neatly at that size, too.
Absolutely stunning. I love how crisp and fresh it is 🙂 Congratulations on another beautiful creation
The back of the quilt is so fun to look at, with the paper still sewn on. Excellent work!
I adore your stars in green. I love green as much as I love purple, and purple is my favourite colour. Thank you for the chance to win such a generous giveaway.
How cool is that! I love your quilt top!

Oh my gosh…what a beautiful quilt! I love it. I’ve followed your blog for a while and have finally mustered up the courage to try paper piecing in hopes of creating some of the beautiful stars you’ve created for this quilt. I’d love to work with the same fabric you worked with in this gorgeous quilt! You’re so creative and really make paper piecing look like something I’d be able to do successfully! Thanks:)
