One finished quilt top and one giveaway…

This week, after a little procrastination. I finally finished sewing all my green stars into a quilt top…

finished green star quilt topI alternated the paper pieced blocks with 8 1/2 inch squares of low volume fabric… using mainly fabrics that had been used in the star blocks.

green star quilt detailI sewed all the blocks together, keeping the paper on the stars.  I have found if I remove the paper from the pattern before I sew everything together there can be issues making everything fit properly.  There can be a lot of bias pieces in paper piecing and you want to minimize the wiggle…

piecingWhen I had sewn all the stars and low volume blocks together I realized the quilt needed a border of some sort.  I ended up making four flying geese blocks and interspersed them within the 3 inch border.

quilt top detailI love how the border and those geese bring the whole quilt together.

green star detailTo celebrate finishing this quilt I thought I would do a little giveaway.

prize packageUp for grabs is this 18 fat eight cuts of fabric so you can make your own green star blocks – 12 different greens and 6 different low volumes.  If you would like to win just leave a comment on this post and we will pick a winner on Monday.   As always I am happy to post overseas.

THE COMPETiTION IS NOW CLOSED.  Thanks.

  1. Fabulous quilt. I love paperpiecing and to combine it with low volume fabrics is ideal. Thank you for the giveaway.

  2. This is a wonderful quilt top. I an slowly learning about color and placement and can’t wait til I feel comfortable picking out my own design. 🙂

  4. This has been fun to watch as it progresses. The green stars stand alone, but wow! How they all come together in a finished quilt! Green is a color I love, but find hard to buy as fabric. It’s nice to see some green inspiration out there.

  5. I love how this has come together I’m working my way up to a paper pieced full size quilt and this technique makes it seem more possible.

  6. It must be wonderfully exciting for you to get this beautiful quilt top put together! I love the border with the geese, it’s just the perfect ending touch on your masterpiece. Which thank you for the heads up about leaving the paper on, that makes all kinds of sense. My favorite color is green so I’m going to go ahead and throw my name into the contest even though I have already been spoiled by Wombat Quilts. I hope you are enjoying the beginning of summer in your neck of the woods!

And I do mean masterpiece. Your Green Star Quilt is stunning!

  7. I’m new to paper piecing and never really thought of how the bias edges might skew the blocks if the paper was removed before sewing the blocks together. Good tip.

  8. I absolutely love your patterns–those stars are so fabulous. Love the green, love the low volume, love the quilt!

  9. I love this quilt top! Really enjoyed seeing it come together block-by-beautiful-block … And I would love to make one myself. I love paper piecing, but I’ve never done a big project like this. And thank you for the giveaway!

  10. Watching you through your green stars block construction to this great looking quilt has been a fun journey. Thanks for the tip to leave the paper on to help prevent wonkiness. I would have ripped it off sooner but perhaps I will give your method a try.

  11. Love how it turned out. And thanks for not only the giveaway, but posting your star patterns as well. I am excited to try a few for a Christmas quilt I am working on.

  12. OMG I am so in love with your green stars and pretty much with all of your work ever since I stumbled across your red and aqua starts. And it so happens that green is my favourite colour and I’ve been looking for a project to use all my lovely green fabrics from my stash. Your gorgeous give away would be the icing on my star quilt cake!

  13. I love how the stars pop against the low volume fabrics and how they aren’t just white or cream. Great job! Thanks for the chance to win.

  14. I have just recently started following ‘wombatquilts’ and loving every post. What initially caught my eye is your use of vibrant colors and unique paper pieced patterns. I am inspired to try what I thought was a daunting process. I have two sisters and am thinking of making your Star Quilt for each of us. I live in Western Canada – there are thousands of wonderful fabrics available here in North America but it is always fun to see the fabrics quilters in other countries are using.

  15. Love how this all came out! I like that you used the same low volume prints for the interspersed squares – rather than a solid. To me it gives the quilt more texture. Do you think that low volume prints create negative space in the same way that a solid would do? Did you consider using solids?

  16. This looks amazing! I love how you combined the stars with the low volume squares, and the geese in the borders are fantastic. Love it!!

  17. Beautiful fabric and beautiful Greens! I’ve done paper piecing doing both leaving paper in & taking it off. There can be that advantage of keeping that block the correct size!
