More Hodge Podge….

As promised I am posting another on of my Hodge Podge Sampler blocks…today’s block has the wonderful title of Mosaic No.1 and is block number 334 in the 1922 version of the Ladies Art Company Quilt Pattern book (link to this later version of the book can be found here).

If you downloaded my first pattern, the Arkansas Snowflake on Monday, the pattern is a little small….Monday evening I amended the PDF so everything is fine, but you may want to down load the new pattern just in case…Arkansas snowflake pattern.

Now the final piece of business is naming the winner of this fabric bundle…

I think I would make my first ever hexie quilt; Recently, I punched out a huge bag of hexies, then realized I didn’t have any fun fabrics to make hexies with, so there sits the bag, on my coffee table, making me feel guilty…..”

Paper Piecing Monday’s Hodge Podge sampler…

For a month or so I have been thinking about what I wanted to do for the next Paper Piecing Monday series, and I finally decided I wanted to do a sampler quilt. Now there are lots of different sampler quilts/patterns/books out there, The Farmers Wife, Dear Jane, the Women of the Bible as well as more modern samplers like Tula Pink’s 100 City Sampler and Elizabeth Hartman’s Patchwork City.

I looked at all my options and made two key decisions… I wanted to got traditional and I did not want to do all the half square triangles that are involved in most of the Farmers Wife/Dear Jane etc. blocks. So I pulled out some of the reference books I have and trawled through the online copy of the Ladies Art Company Quilt Pattern Book of 1898 (you can check it out here).

So my new adventure will be mainly paper pieced interpretations of very traditional blocks…where I can I will give you the name or names the block goes by as well as any different layouts for the block pieces…with a few of these traditional blocks different fabric placement gives you a completely different block and block name. All the blocks will all be 6 inches square finished.

So to start I give you my version of the Arkansas Snowflake…

Playing with a Lizzy Rainbow… and a giveaway

Last weekend my darling husband abandoned me to go on a boys camping trip, and as soon as he had walked out the door I knew exactly what I was doing with my free time….

You see just before DH left I took delivery of the latest Lizzy House range, Lovely Hunt….and I knew that I had to use it immediately so I pulled out ALL my Lizzy House fabric….

…and cut out a 5 inch square from each piece of fabric. Then, using my hexagon mini for guidance I got to work….

As there was no husband I could keep working without having to pack things away… I had squares and fabric all over the floor…and it took me a couple of days to get all the blocks up…I kept adjusting and rearranging, coming back to the design wall in between other tasks…I finally ended up with this…

The first block I placed was the low volume cats and then I just worked slowly from there. I tried to tackle one or two colours at a time, making sure that there was a flow to the colours…

Not all the fabric made it into this quilt top…

I only ended up using 168 different fabrics and had about 20 left over. I could not work out how to make the brown palette work so it did not even get a look in.

A couple of the prints had too much colour variation in them at 5 inches big to make the them work, but all the wonderful blenders…the Pearl Bracelets, the mini bracelets, the Butterflies and the chain links helped make the novelty fabrics play nice.

This quilt is definitely my quilt… it is not going anywhere but onto our couch. As the weather starts to turn icky here in the Pacific Northwest this quilt will keep me warm and cozy…. all I have to do is finish it up!

Now while I was cutting up my Lizzy Stash I cut an extra fat eight or two for a give away. By the time I had finished working through my stash I had a stack of 25 different fabrics… including quite a few out of print beauties, as well as some of the new Lovely Hunt….

Paper Piecing Monday’s Little Houses…

This past week I have working away on projects for other people… which has somewhat limited my selfish sewing. In between finishing charity quilts I have been making tiny little houses…

These little buildings are 5 1/2 inch square and are the only paper piecing I have done in the last week or so…. the pattern is called “Outhouse” and is by Carolyn Friedlander …I am also using mainly her fabrics to make this round of blocks…

I am going to be teaching a class on making these little houses at my LQS, Modern Domestic, and this will be my class sample…

I am almost done with making the blocks and it has been a fun challenge… and I have employed quite a few tricks which have made the process a little easier.

I am looking forward to getting back to some of my other projects later this week…. I hear my Lizzy House butterflies calling my name.

Dinosaurs for everyone…

This week I finished up my Lizzy House Dinosaur quilt….

Over the summer I taught a wonderful group of young ladies (aged 10 – 14) how to make a quilt. Blocks from my test run of that class are what made up this wonderfully fun quilt…

The pattern is a simple rail fence variation….

all you do is cut strips 3 inches wide by the length of the fabric (usually 42 inches long)… then you sew four of these strips together… then you cut out 10 1/2 inch blocks… easy peasy.

The highlight of this quilt is of course the dinosaurs…. oh how I love those dinosaurs….
