Clearing the backlog…

I have been working hard this week to start clearing the backlog of quilt tops I have floating around my work space. What is spurring me on is the fact that I have not donated quilts to Project Linus for a couple of months now and am feeling a little bad about it.

So I spent yesterday day basting some tops up and managed in amongst it all to get my 1001 Peeps top finally finished. I first blogged about this quilt months ago (you can find the link here). So without further ado here is finally a compete finish.

I love the 1001 Peeps range by Lizzy House, actually I love everything Lizzy House does. She is one of my favorite fabric designers and you will see her Pearl Bracelet range in just about everything I do.

This square in square pattern is so easy and just perfect for fussy cutting.

I backed the quilt using scrap bits of the fabric I had left over from making the front and a splash of solids.

Finally I bound and labeled the quilt so it is now ready for delivery to the Project Linus meeting this month.

I am hoping to get at least another two tops finished this week. Wish me luck.

Paper Piecing Monday fussy cut edition

Today’s paper piecing Monday is a little detour from the regularly scheduled sampler quilt. Over the weekend Amanda at What the Bobbin? started a fussy square block swap and I was so excited I started making blocks almost immediately. There is swap joining details and a downloadable pattern on her site.

The idea of pulling out some of my fun novelty fabrics, fussy cutting them and making them into 4 inch blocks was too much fun…. here is what I have done so far.

I have so many great novelty scraps I can see myself getting quite carried away. But for now I am going to finish making my 12 blocks, then move onto finishing up some of the quilt tops I have laying in pieces around my work space. I want to have a finish for Friday.

An almost finished Friday

Last night I finally finished pulling all the paper off my floral crackers quilt. 80 blocks, 79 different floral fabrics and 1/2 a ton of paper later I have this beauty.

There was finally a break in the rain this morning, so I dashed out to take this photo. Not perfect conditions but I was glad for any sort of respite from the deluge.

Enough about the weather… back to quilting. The top is made using the traditional cracker quilt block. I paper piece this top but you can find links to making the pattern on my original post here.

I used as many bright multi-coloured floral fabrics as I could find and only accidentally doubled up on one fabric. There is a lot of Kaffe Fassett in this quilt along with Amy Butler and Denyse Schmidt.

I used random black and white fabric for the background of the pattern but if I was to make this quilt again I would probably go with a low volume fabric option with more colour in it. Don’t get me wrong, I like the black and white but I think in hindsight more colour in the background would have made a different type of quilt top.

This quilt already has a home to go to. I have till the middle of June to get it finished, so it can be presented to a graduating foster kid in the Portland area. Project Linus every year makes sure kids graduating from the foster system & high school have a quilt to take with them on the next stage of their life.

But for now I am off to clean up the paper mess I have made…. it is the curse of paper piecing!

Triangle love – wip Wednesday

This week I have been playing with triangles just to try something different. Some months back I bought a triangle ruler after seeing some many fabulous triangle quilts on-line. I promptly came home and cut stacks of fabric and made my first triangle quilt.

The finished quilt was cute but far from perfect. The blocks did not line up exactly which annoyed me no end, and it was more time-consuming than I had thought it would be. I put the triangle ruler away in a drawer and moved on.

Fast forward 6 months and I had the urge to try triangles again. This time I found a paper piecing pattern in my copy of “Modern Blocks” which I scanned and amended a little. The end result was blocks that looked like this.

I love this pattern. It can easily be done free hand, using a triangle ruler and 1 1/2 inch strips. I have been playing with this block over the last couple of days using two different kinds of fabric from my stash. The above blocks are part of my scrappy quilt, which is coming together like this.

I love the olive and hot pink colour combination, but I did discover that my stash has a disturbing lack of bright pink. There is a trip to the fabric store in my future to rectify the situation. I also took this pattern and tried it out with some Denyse Schmdit fabrics I had in my stash.

I am not totally sure about this version of the block. I like the idea of using just one print in the middle with appropriate fabrics for the outside sashing but I think I may need a stronger central print. What do you think?

Flower Garden quilt finished

If have finally finished my Flower Garden quilt. The quilt may look familiar as I use the unfinished quilt top to as my blog header, but here it is all completed….

There is an element of crazy to this quilt. I really wanted to just use all my bright floral fabrics in one simple quilt. The end result is loud, crazy, fun and bright. I LOVE IT.
