Revisiting Starry Night

Last week’s paper piecing blocks, along with some of your comments, reminded me that I needed to finish my Starry Night quilt top up.  So this week I am determined to make some good headway on it…. starting with a couple of new 6 inch blocks…

Lucky Star pinwheel blockThis little star is another of Don’t Call Me Betsy’s “Lucky Star” blocks from last years BOM series.  It was fun using my teeny tiny bits of scraps to make this pretty.

Lucky Star block piecesI did make a small adjustment because of the size of the block, and used a larger scrap for the final blue sky piece, opting not to do a little piece in the corner.  I also realised making these blocks that I needed to use smaller scale prints to get that scrappy contrast.

mini starWith my second star I managed to squeak some Pearl Bracelets in, but I had to position the scrap just right so the dots showed up.  This block is a 6 inch star that I found on my EQ7 program – it has some neat paper pieced blocks.  Julie at 627 Handworks’ Global Concept block is very similar to my tiny block, but bigger.  You can find her free paper piecing pattern here.

I think one or two more blocks and I will be ready to start putting this top together.  I am going to work this week at how I want to handle the negative space, playing with some scrappy navy/blue blocks as filler.   I will share the results next week.

Adventure Time wip Wednesday

After several “low volume” projects recently I wanted to do something different, loud, bright.   I found inspiration in the pages of my husband’s Adventure Time comic for my new block.  If you know Adventure  Time at all you will see the strong influence of Princess Bubblegum in this block.  She regularly pops up in Jake & Finn’s crazy adventures.  Now if you do not know Adventure Time, this is Princess Bubblegum.

After pulling a stash of bubblegum pink fabric and aqua/blue fabric, I found a pattern I liked and started cutting.   The end result is this…

modern scrap quilt block

With this block I did not let the pattern’s unpleasant name ( “turkey giblets”) turn me off.  You can find the paper piecing pattern I used at Quilters Cache.  It is a really easy pattern to make and is made up of two triangle blocks that are joined to make the building block of the quilt.

I can not wait to see how this quilt top comes together. I think it is going to be a quilt like my “Sun & Sea” quilt where the final overall quilt pattern looks so different from the individual block pattern.

Pinwheel Paper Piecing Monday

The pastel pin wheel fun continues this week with the latest Paper Piecing Block.

This quilt is going to scream ‘pin wheel’ by the time I have finished.  I found some more fun patterns this weekend and I am excited to get some more blocks done so I can put up a wip photo for you.

blocks pieces

This is one of the easier patterns taking only 32 pieces to complete.  The blocks pattern was the “test” pattern for Don’t Call Me Betsy’s “Lucky Star Block” series  I made this block before – it was part of my Paper Piecing Monday Boston Edition.  One pattern, two very different blocks, which what I love about these patterns… lots of options.

I am now patiently awaiting the October block.  I love getting a new pattern in my email every month, a fun little present for me to play with.

Paper Piecing Monday presents Garfunkel

Another Monday, another paper pieced block.  Yipee.  Today’s block is a little more complex than my last few, but is sooooo fabulous.  May I present Garfunkel…

Garfunkel paper pieced quilt block

When Julie at 627Handworks.com posted this block a couple of weeks ago I fell in love.  It took me a week or so to work out how I wanted to approach the block and what colours I wanted to use.  I ended up choosing red/pink combinations, but wanted to use so many more colours.  For the first time I was really really frustrated by this sampler quilt’s limited palette.    The FREE paper piecing pattern can be found here.

66 fabulous pieces to make this hexagon wonder.  I have already started planning how I am going to use this pattern again –  it is so effective and I am a little hexagon obsessed at the moment!

Have a great Monday.

Paper Piecing Monday presents Lithium

I am a little late posting this week’s block and I am blaming Wimbledon.    I have been watching the matches on my computer which meant I had to wait for Tomic (the last Aussie standing) to loose his match.  Now that the tennis is over for today, my computer is free to post this weeks block.   And so I present my version of Lithium….

This is another fabulous pattern from Julie’s Block Rock’n series.  You can find the free paper piecing pattern at her blog 627handworks.com.  Make sure you check out  Julie’s version of Lithium, it shows what real variety you can get with this pattern.

Litium block pieces

I am sure I will be doing this block again, without the constraints of the my current colour palette of grey and one other colour (it seemed like such a good idea at the time!).   I also may have got a little carried away with the dots this week!

Next week I will have enough blocks to start laying out this quilt to see how it is coming together, so stay tuned for some WIP shots.

Linking up with Let’s Get Acquainted which is being hosted this week by Quilts in the Queue.
