Paper piecing Wednesday!!!!

This week’s paper piecing adventure was delayed a few days due to the SMS Giveaway… my apologies. But I think it was worth the wait… okay I am a little biased…what do you think?

A little bit about this particular pattern… it is a free paper pieced pattern from Craftsy called Compass Flower by Quilt Art Designs. The pattern is for a 25 cm (9 inch) compass star, has 80 pieces and is definitely not a “simple” pattern in my classification system as it has 16 paper pieced parts.

It is more a medium level pattern. What made it a little more interesting is that there is no instructions on how to put the pieces together and a small hiccup with the numbering system – there is no “G” on the pattern. Luckily it is not rocket science and goes together pretty easily (A is attached to B, C is attached to D and then you attach AB to CD etc).

As with all my paper piecing blocks this month this block is headed to Sarah @nohatsinthehouse.com for her charity quilts #opgivewarmth. I am having so much fun with these charity blocks… who knew doing good could be so much fun!

Briar Rose wip Wednesday

This week I finally got up the courage to cut into my bundle of beautiful Briar Rose fabric. I wanted this fabric soooo much that I saved up my money and pre-ordered a 1/2 yard bundle from Pink Castle Fabrics… something I had never done before.

The bundle has then sat, untouched, on my quilting desk. I would occasionally pat it or rearrange the fabrics but I could not find the perfect block to inspire me to pick up my rotary cutter.

Fast forward to last weekend when I got a fabulous email from Katie at SwimBikeQuilt. I had won a prize during her 100 Quilts for Kids campaign… and the prize was three pattern from the fabulous Red Pepper Quilts. Needless to say there was much excitement and shouting and dancing around the house. I had been eyeing up Rita’s Labyrinth pattern for a while and was so excited to receive a copy of it in my pattern bundle. I now had the perfect Briar Rose pattern.

The pattern is so easy to follow and so fun to make. I have been having a blast cutting up my stash, laying out the block bits and choosing what fabrics goes where.

It is a refreshing break for me to be using just one line of fabric… no wading through scrap bins…. no huge piles of fabric in one particular colour.

Instead there is just a bundle of pretty on the cutting table and a yard or two of Kona Snow. Not a piece of paper in sight. (my printer is taking a bit of a rest).

Though I must admit that my blocks are not as perfect as they would be if I was using a paper pattern, I love them none the less. I am embracing the fun of making these blocks, enjoying the beauty of the fabric line and relishing the thrill of doing something a little outside my comfort zone.

Flying Geese Paper Piecing Monday style

This week I am taking a short break from my grey sampler quilt to share a little Bee crazy with you. I was super excited to recently joined a do.good. Stitches circle. I excitedly did the first blocks for my Bee, forgot to photograph them and then sent them to the wrong person. I was off to a flying start with the group!

Then the August block was posted and I must admit I gasped a little. This is why – 3 inch flying geese culminating in a 12 inch block with 96 pieces…

The requested blocks were from Liesel Made’s crazy mini patchwork sampler series. You can find the original post here. As I read the instructions for making the block I thought there had to be a way to make this which was not going to freak me out. My answer was of course PAPER PIECING! Paper piecing was the only way I personally was going to be able to make those precise little triangles.

So I pulled out my graph paper and made a pattern.

In the end these were fun blocks to make. I used up lots of little scraps which always makes me happy and messed with the triangle layout a little. If you want to make this block the paper way, please feel free to use my graph paper pattern – 3 inch Flying Geese pattern.

Next week it will be back to our regularly scheduled program.

Paper piecing Monday is back…

I am pleased to say I managed to get a block done for this week’s paper piecing Monday… and here she is.

This pattern is another fabulous free paper piecing pattern from Julie at 627Handworks Block Rock’n. It is called Caldonia and you can find the PDF pattern here.

I love the proportions of this star. In my last quilt round I did a similar pattern but this one is definitely my favorite.

Paper Piecing Monday continues…

It is week two of my new sampler quilt and I once again went to Julie’s fabulous free Block Rock’n patterns. The pattern for this week is called Icky Thump, and with a name like that I had to make it.

It is a simple pattern in just four pieces (as opposed to a lot of the stars I have recently made which are 8 pattern pieces). Just 24 fabric pieces to make this block, but it still looks complex and interesting. I think a quilt of these blocks would be spectacular, but for now I am settling for adding just one block to my new sampler quilt.
