Special Spinning block

After two weeks of teaching quilting to kids, I am back to posting…starting with a special quilt block.  Last week my Do.Good.Stitches bee was set the challenge for this month to make some red/white/blue spinning blocks.

special spin blockSo I designed this block with the challenge in mind…and over the next couple of weeks I will share the pattern for the blocks I have made for this challenge.

sewing sectionsThe structure for this pattern was a little different from how I usually do my stars and the pattern needs to be sewn in sections.  I must admit I did have to do some unpicking because I sewed one set of my pieces together back to front.

Mini Kaleidoscope Quilt

Last week I looked at the bag of Lizzy House fabric scraps I had gathered in the last couple of months and I decided I needed to do something with them… a couple of hours later and I had made this little beauty…

Kaleidoscope mini quiltMost of the scraps I was playing with were tiny little bits and so I designed a little, fat kaleidoscope block to make this quilt.   A tiny paper pieced block allowed me to get accuracy with my piecing while being able to do some fun fussy cutting…

fussy cut 2Each block is made up of four (4) pieces which were 1 1/2 inch square.. the finished block is 3 inches small.  This was such a fun quilt to make, and I used a lot of my little white on white scraps as well as my precious Lizzy House bits.

I have signed up for one more mini quilt swap, so I warn you there will be some more paper pieced little quilts shortly.

One finished quilt top and one giveaway…

This week, after a little procrastination. I finally finished sewing all my green stars into a quilt top…

finished green star quilt topI alternated the paper pieced blocks with 8 1/2 inch squares of low volume fabric… using mainly fabrics that had been used in the star blocks.

green star quilt detailI sewed all the blocks together, keeping the paper on the stars.  I have found if I remove the paper from the pattern before I sew everything together there can be issues making everything fit properly.  There can be a lot of bias pieces in paper piecing and you want to minimize the wiggle…

piecingWhen I had sewn all the stars and low volume blocks together I realized the quilt needed a border of some sort.  I ended up making four flying geese blocks and interspersed them within the 3 inch border.

quilt top detailI love how the border and those geese bring the whole quilt together.

green star detailTo celebrate finishing this quilt I thought I would do a little giveaway.

prize packageUp for grabs is this 18 fat eight cuts of fabric so you can make your own green star blocks – 12 different greens and 6 different low volumes.  If you would like to win just leave a comment on this post and we will pick a winner on Monday.   As always I am happy to post overseas.

THE COMPETiTION IS NOW CLOSED.  Thanks.

A little miscalculation…

This week I finally decided on the layout for my green star quilt….and in doing so realised I was one block short!    So it was back to the drawing board…literally…and a new block was designed…

outlined starThis is my Outlined star…a fun little star with 32 lovely little pieces.  I designed this star after staring at the other blocks on my design wall for a week or so and it seems to fit nicely into the Green star mix.

quilt block piecesIf you would like to add this star to your collection you can find a free PDF of an 8 inch  pattern here….Outlined star pattern.

And here is a glimpse of what I am planning for these blocks…

quilt block layoutI hope to have a finished quilt top to share with you on Friday…

The last green star….

Welcome to Paper Piecing Monday….the final edition of the Green Star series…

fractured starThere is no rhyme or reason for my colour placement on this star… I just had fun and put scraps where ever they fitted.  Some how it seemed the thing to do with this the 20th star in the series.  Yep you read that right, I made 20 green stars and shared 20 patterns.

block partsI had a change of heart this week about how I wanted to layout of the stars in the final quilt, and so do not want to share anything yet.  I hope to play some more this week and have a WIP (work in progress) shot for you next week.

The last 8 inch star pattern can be found here…fractured star pattern.

Do not fret, paper piecing Monday will be back next week, but with something NON star related.
