Continuing my Lizzy House infatuation…

Last week I managed to finish up my Constellation quilt, which is currently winging its way to its new home in Indiana.

I started this quilt a while ago, after I got my hands on some treasured pieces of Lizzy House’s Constellation line. I have been a big fan of Ms. Houses for a while now…she designs the most fun novelty fabric. I love her bright colour choices and graphic illustrations… and I do not just use them in my charity quilts for kids, I try to sneak Pearl Bracelets into nearly every quilt I make!

I loved the blues and touch of purple of this line and it was so easy to put this quilt together using just the Constellation fabric line, some Pearl Braceletss and a few supporting solids.

I paper pieced the six-inch cross blocks… you can find the free pattern here.

To quilt this baby up I just used my walking foot and followed the lines of the crosses. I love how the quilting echoes the crosses, while adding a nice grid pattern to the quilt.

I wanted some denser quilting on this quilt, as it is for my new nephew, Tobias…and I knew from the experience of his big brother’s quilt, that this quilt needed to be able to stand up to pretty constant washing and hardy wear and tear.

For the back of the quilt I used three different Lizzy House prints…two of which are from her recent Natural History range. These fabrics just worked perfectly with the front… and I could not resist sneaking this marvelous gem print into the quilt.

Now I must warn you this is only one of several Lizzy House quilts I have been working on. I am slightly addicted to Lizzy’s fabrics and am eagerly awaiting her new line, A lovely Hunt, in September… it has unicorns in it!

More red white and blue…

As July comes to an end so does my red, white and blue pinwheel blocks….

I mixed the colouring up this week and I love the red background…I hope it works with the other blocks being made for the Quilting Bee…

There is another fun way to make this block, which gives you a very different looking block…still with a lot of movement in it.

Special Spinning block

After two weeks of teaching quilting to kids, I am back to posting…starting with a special quilt block. Last week my Do.Good.Stitches bee was set the challenge for this month to make some red/white/blue spinning blocks.

So I designed this block with the challenge in mind…and over the next couple of weeks I will share the pattern for the blocks I have made for this challenge.

The structure for this pattern was a little different from how I usually do my stars and the pattern needs to be sewn in sections. I must admit I did have to do some unpicking because I sewed one set of my pieces together back to front.

Mini Kaleidoscope Quilt

Last week I looked at the bag of Lizzy House fabric scraps I had gathered in the last couple of months and I decided I needed to do something with them… a couple of hours later and I had made this little beauty…

Most of the scraps I was playing with were tiny little bits and so I designed a little, fat kaleidoscope block to make this quilt. A tiny paper pieced block allowed me to get accuracy with my piecing while being able to do some fun fussy cutting…

Each block is made up of four (4) pieces which were 1 1/2 inch square.. the finished block is 3 inches small. This was such a fun quilt to make, and I used a lot of my little white on white scraps as well as my precious Lizzy House bits.

One finished quilt top and one giveaway…

This week, after a little procrastination. I finally finished sewing all my green stars into a quilt top…

I alternated the paper pieced blocks with 8 1/2 inch squares of low volume fabric… using mainly fabrics that had been used in the star blocks.

I sewed all the blocks together, keeping the paper on the stars. I have found if I remove the paper from the pattern before I sew everything together there can be issues making everything fit properly. There can be a lot of bias pieces in paper piecing and you want to minimize the wiggle…

When I had sewn all the stars and low volume blocks together I realized the quilt needed a border of some sort. I ended up making four flying geese blocks and interspersed them within the 3 inch border.

I love how the border and those geese bring the whole quilt together.

To celebrate finishing this quilt I thought I would do a little giveaway.
