Bee Block fun… wip Wednesday

This week has been all about Bee Blocks… finishing up my September blocks and making decisions about the October blocks. First up is do.Good.Stitches Hope blocks…

After last month’s crazy mini flying geese block it was refreshing to do a nice easy fun block. The request was for two 12 inch log modern log cabin blocks… right up my alley.

The other Bee request was for some Trip Along blocks. We were given a bit of range when doing these blocks, so I stepped outside my colour comfort zone and ended up with a woodland inspired block…

In between the Bee blocks I have been adding more blocks to my Zakka Flower quilt. This weeks new blocks include these two lovelies.

These flowers are decidedly addictive. I am currently at 18 flowers and have more cut ready to go. It does not help my addiction that Denyse Schmidt has designed so much great fabric!

The final project of the week has been getting some photographs taken of ME. Any of you who have explored my block in-depth or follow me will know that:

(1) I hate having my photo taken; and

(2) there is only one photo of me up on the site and it is ancient.

I finally had to give in and get some head shots done, so without further ado here is an out take from the shoot…

My darling BFF’s helped me out which meant the whole experience was not too traumatic… and there was lots and lots of laughter.

Pinwheel Paper Piecing Monday

The pastel pin wheel fun continues this week with the latest Paper Piecing Block.

This quilt is going to scream ‘pin wheel’ by the time I have finished. I found some more fun patterns this weekend and I am excited to get some more blocks done so I can put up a wip photo for you.

This is one of the easier patterns taking only 32 pieces to complete. The blocks pattern was the “test” pattern for Don’t Call Me Betsy’s “Lucky Star Block” series I made this block before – it was part of my Paper Piecing Monday Boston Edition. One pattern, two very different blocks, which what I love about these patterns… lots of options.

I am now patiently awaiting the October block. I love getting a new pattern in my email every month, a fun little present for me to play with.

Quilts for kids

I can not believe that we are already 13 days into September… this month is going way to fast for me. I have Bee blocks to do and quilts to finish and not a sewing elf in sight. Augh!

As September is slipping away I bustled this week to get a couple more quilts finished for the 100 Quilts for Kids project. I raided my pile of unfinished/nearly finished quilts and found two that I could easily complete without too much sweat, and that would be kid suitable.

The first quilt is my scrappy spiderweb quilt, which has been sitting waiting to be completed for over a year.

I really put a dent in my scrap pile with this little beauty. Lots and lots of different fabrics which means lots of “I spy” potential. It is a really fun quilt.

The other quilt I finished this week is a quick and easy wonky star quilt. I must admit wonky stars are my all time favorite “go to” quilt if I have to get something done in a hurry.

For this quilt I used a darling fussy cut novelty fabric for the center piece and then bright scraps for the star points. Most of these scrap triangles were left over from my “sparkle punch” wonky star quilt.

To back the quilt I used some bigger pieces from the same fabric range by Jone Hallmark.

Both these quilts side by side you can see which one I spent days and days making and which one was done in a few hours. In the end both will be loved and treasured in equal measure, I hope.

Inspiration can come from the strangest places

I am constantly amazed by what inspires me – where ideas and colour combinations for a quilt come from. This week’s work in progress is a good case in point.

This bright scrap quilt was inspired by my local petrol/gas station logo.

Strange I know, but I was filling the car up one day and realized I really love these two colours together. I promptly came home and pulled some scraps and made up this block.

I originally posted about this flying geese pattern back in April this year. You can find the original post, with a free paper piecing pattern here. A couple of months later and I got the urge to finish this quilt top, so I pulled fabric from my stash as well as from my scrap pile and started work.

Now I have a stack of blocks and I am gradually putting the top together.

My placement is random and fun and I have thrown in a couple of reverse blocks to break things up. It is kind of fun making the arrows go all over the place.

I have also been thinking of making some yellow arrows with yellow background, but I am not sure about it. Any thoughts?

Pastel pretty – Paper piecing Monday

This week marks the start of my next paper piecing adventure. It took me a little while to choose my colour palette for this quilt and in the end I wanted to do something softer. So without further ado here is the first block of the series…

The block is the September block from Don’t Call Me Betsy’s “Lucky Star BOM” program. I subscribed to this series at the beginning of the year and have made a few of the blocks over the year, including for my Paper piecing Boston Blocks. They are great patterns and the fun thing is if you sign up for the BOM program now you get January to September immediately. None of the waiting month by month that I had to do – have I mentioned I am not overly patient!

This pattern is an easy 44 pieces and I love the pin wheel in the center. I hope you like the new palette and will join me next week for the block number 2.
