Paper Piecing Monday the Global edition

Welcome to another edition of Paper Piecing Monday.  On the weekend I found the perfect layout of my current sampler blocks and I am very excited.  The pattern uses just 10 blocks so I am nearing the end of this colour way.  But before we say good-bye there is a block or two to do…

Free paper piecing star block

The block is Julie at 627handworks “Global Concept” paper piecing pattern.  You can find the free pattern here.  As with all of Julie’s patterns there are so many ways this block can be interpreted.  I went with the light grey star in the center after toying with the idea of using the light blue fabrics in the center piece.   I am loving how it finished up.

Global block pieces

The block takes 35 pieces  and is one of the least complex of Julie’s patterns, not that you can tell by the finished block.  Using all scrap pieces to make my “Global Concept” added a complexity to it, which I love.

More music inspired paper piecing next week…

Mercury rising – Paper piecing Monday

Today’s paper piecing pattern is called Mercury, which seems quite appropriate as the temperature gets warmer and warmer.  Is it just me or do you also find it harder to quilt in summer?  The sunshine and daylight keeps calling me out to play.

Anyway back to Mercury…

modern paper piecing star block

Yep it is another fabulous free paper piecing pattern from the amazing Julie at 627handworks.  You can find the pattern and directions on here.  I think there are only two more patterns left in Julie’s Block Rock’n paper piecing patterns.  There are going to be some severe withdrawal symptoms when these blocks end and any suggestions on how to convenience her not to stop would be greatly appreciated.

mercury block pieces

56 perfect little pieces which make up this fun block.  As you can see from the pattern there are a couple of different options for piecing this thing.  Again you can have fun with it and play around with your colours and fabrics.

Now the call of the sun is too much… I am heading outside for some vitamin D.

The fabulous Penny Lane – Paper Piecing Monday

When I saw the name of today’s block I could not help but smile.  I know the block is named after the Beatles song, but Penny Lane reminds me so much of Kate Hudson’s character in “Almost Famous”, one of my favorite films.  I think it is a fitting block for both the song and the character…

modern scrap paper pieced star

This 72 piece beauty is another fabulous block for the amazing Julie at 627handworks. You can find the free paper piecing pattern here.  Her version of this pattern is darling and very different from mine.

Penny lane block segments

This block was not without a hiccup or two.  First there was the “not concentrating on what I am doing mistake” which resulted in this misformed section and lots of unpicking.

whoops

Then I managed to break a needle trying to go through the center bulk.  I had forgotten to remove the paper bits from the middle section to make it easier to sew through.  Whoops.

Despite all this I love how this block came out. It is going to fit beautifully with the other blocks.  I may end up replacing my last green block which is also scrappy but which is too messy for me… if you are curious you can find it here.

Paper Piecing Monday presents Morrison

I can not believe I am already at block 6 of my bright sampler quilt.  This week’s block is called the Morrison…

Morrison paper pieced quilt block

The pattern is once again from Julie’s Block Rock’n collection.  You can find the free paper piecing pattern here, along with different layouts for the block.  In Julie’s test block she does more with the center of the block which I really like, and which makes for a quite different  pattern.

The Morrison is not to complex a pattern and uses only 40 pieces of fabric… perfect for the scrappy approach.

Morrison block components

As I have made it to 6 blocks, I could finally lay out the blocks and see how the quilt is coming together.

Brights sampler wip

I am pleased with what I have so far.  I do love how the colour pops against the neutral grey background.    Six down, quite a few more to go…. so see you back here next week for installment 7.

Paper Piecing Monday presents Lithium

I am a little late posting this week’s block and I am blaming Wimbledon.    I have been watching the matches on my computer which meant I had to wait for Tomic (the last Aussie standing) to loose his match.  Now that the tennis is over for today, my computer is free to post this weeks block.   And so I present my version of Lithium….

Free paper piecing pattern

This is another fabulous pattern from Julie’s Block Rock’n series.  You can find the free paper piecing pattern at her blog 627handworks.com.  Make sure you check out  Julie’s version of Lithium, it shows what real variety you can get with this pattern.

Litium block pieces

I am sure I will be doing this block again, without the constraints of the my current colour palette of grey and one other colour (it seemed like such a good idea at the time!).   I also may have got a little carried away with the dots this week!

Next week I will have enough blocks to start laying out this quilt to see how it is coming together, so stay tuned for some WIP shots.

Linking up with Let’s Get Acquainted which is being hosted this week by Quilts in the Queue.
