Paper Piecing Monday… better late than never

Paper Piecing Monday was delayed a little this week by a stonking cold that took me out of action for a few days. I am feeling a little more human today and managed to get this simple little star block made, thru the Dayquil/Lemsip haze…

This block is 6 inches by 6 inches and was again designed in response to my search for smaller star blocks for my Starry Night Quilt. This is a much simpler block than last week, I got a ribbing for calling last week’s block “simple” at 40 pieces. This week’s 20 pieces is definitely simple…right! You can find the pattern here…Starry Night WQ block 2.

I like the 4 triangle piece pattern of this block and may fiddle some more with it to get some different kind of stars. Next week I am going to scale up and aim to get a 10 inch block designed and made… stay tuned.

Yep more Starry Nights

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I had struggled to find some smaller blocks for my Starry Night quilt, so I have been working on designing some smaller blocks for my quilt. This week’s block is a simple 8 inch block…

You can find the pattern I made here…WQ Starry Night Block 1. It is a simple 40 piece block with no really small pieces (which is the problem I found with shrinking a lot of the more complex patterns).

As a side…when I ran my test block I did not number the pattern, but I promise the attached pattern sheet has numbered pieces…promise.

Another Starry Night wonder

After a relaxing week off I am slowly getting back into the swing of quilting again…very slowly. For this week’s paper piecing Monday I decided to do another Carol Doak star.

I do love how this blocks look all fractured and broken but really beautiful at the same time. For this star I used the Washington Star pattern from my trusty copy of “50 Fabulous Paper Pieced Stars”.

This block, and it’s 64 pieces was a real scrap buster. I did not cut one piece of fabric to make this block and just used bits and pieces from my scrap bin. This process made me realise I have way to many little bits of fabric….sorting thru my scrap bins is now on my “Things to Do in 2014” list.

Block Rock’n Sampler quilt

After a year of Paper Piecing Monday I have finally finished a quilt from my Monday blocks. I am very proud to present my Block Rock’n sampler quilt top.

All these blocks are from Julie at 627Handwork’s fabulous free Block Rock’n pattern collection. There are only two blocks from her collection missing from this quilt – my Icky Thump block became part of the beautiful Icicle quilt and Julie’s Floyd block which I have not made yet.

For the record my favourite block is this beauty….

For the quilting of this lovely , I went with diagonal lines, which seemed appropriate with the off center block placement I went with.

For the backing I found some fabulously outrageous IKEA fabric in my stash which was just perfect. The photo does not do these neon lips justice.

The final touch was some solid Kona grey binding, which was attached using the sewing machine. I figured that this quilt might get a lot of love (and stains) and wanted it to be as durable as possible. Machine binding, though not as pretty as hand binding, in my opinion, does add some sturdiness.

I seriously love how this quilt came together… so much so that it is staying with me. It is going to be our couch quilt and I am soooooo excited.

Snowflakes paper piecing Monday style

This week I have taken a break from my Starry Nights to make a quilt block for Nicole at Modern Handcraft. As part of the ScrapBeelicious Bee, Nicole asked for Christmas inspired blocks which put me into an absolute blind panic.

You see the truth is I do not understand Christmas quilts. It may be because where I am from it tends to be about 90 degrees + on Christmas day and a quilt is the last thing on earth you want anywhere near you. It may be because I do not understand making a quilt that you use, at most, one month of the year. Do not get me wrong, I LOVE Christmas, I just do not get Christmas quilts.

So with that in mind I pondered what to do for this month’s blocks…. and this is what I came up with.

A scrappy snowflake star. Nicole did say her colours where white, grey and red. Okay it does not scream Christmas but it is very pretty. I mashed up two of Carol Doak’s patterns again from her “50 Fabulous Paper Pieced Star” book – this time Oklahoma and Ohio. My pieces count on this one is 100 – the Oklahoma block is a little fiddly.
